Enrique's mother, Lourdes, abaonsined her children to immigrate to the United States.

Maria Isabel refuses to go to the Unired States with Enrique because she wants to stay with their daughter. She does, however, join him later, and they later pay a smuggler to bring Jasmin (their daughter) to them.

Enrique's father abandons him and leaves him with his grandmother when he remarries.
