What is the purpose of the "giants" game?

The Giant's game was a method of evaluation. The higher ups, like Graff, could evaluate how Ender reacts to the stress of an "unwinable" game. They wanted to see if Ender had what it took to think outside of the box, to break the rules in order to win.
