what gives Ender hope in the midst of these wolves?

Ender makes friends with Petra, one of the few actual friends that he makes. She teaches him to be a better marksman but more than this he is able to observe the "wolves" in action. By careful observation and playing with other "launchies" Ender is able to understand successes and failures. Ender gains confidence that he is better than any of the other kids.
