I think this scene speaks to the fact that most people have no clue exactly why they are fighting the Buggers. The mask elicits fear, mystery, ignorance, and hate. This is a potent formula that fuels war. Mother wants to avoid addressing the whole situation. Father sounds like he wants to acknowledge the war but does not know. or wish to know, the reasons behind the conflict.
