How were the humans able to avoid destruction during the Second Invasion?

The second Invasion, a colonizing mission for the Buggers, was unsuccessful because Mazer Rackham defeated the invaders by shooting the queen ship. The Queen controlled all the Formics so, once she no longer controlled them, the others stopped functioning.
