Where was Willy Loman driving to in the beginning of the play, and why has he come back unexpectedly?

Willy was on the road and on his way to Portland, Maine. He tells Linda he was too tired to drive, so he turned around and came home.

WILLY: I’ll have to send a wire to Portland. I’m supposed to see Brown and Morrison tomorrow morning at ten o’clock to show the line.
