Cue for Treason

Why didn’t the narrator’s father want his wife to know where he and his boys were going in the middle of the night?

They quite simply didn't want her involved because they were joining with other estates-men at the commonland where they planned to tear down Sir Philip’s rock wall. This would be a treasoness act; the less the wife knew about her family's actions the better.
