What system existed before capitalism in Europe in the 19th Century?

I'm not an expert on this work but I think feudalism began to lay the groundwork for mercantilism that would eventually lead to capitalism. It was technology developed during what Marx labeled as the pre-capitalism era that would spark capitalism.
