Civil Disobedience
Is Thoreau's concept of civil disobedience compatible with a democratic government? Why or why not ?
Why or why not
Why or why not
In my opinion, Thoreau's concept of civil disobedience is definitely not compatible with a democratic government. Democracy can only be successful when the community as a whole passes laws based on majority appeal. Thoreau didn't pay his taxes out of a sense of rebellion, but the majority paid its taxes based upon the common good. Note, I do not believe there is anything wrong with Thoreau's concept of self-reliance. In a crisis, historical and futuristic, people have had and might need to rely on themselves in certain situations.... something that most people might have trouble with in our modern age.
