How does the book end? What happens to buck?

With Thornton killed by the Yeehats Buck is beckoned to his wild calling. Buck ends up joining a wild Timber wolf and takes his place as alpha-dog of the Yukon. I suppose this was London's point all along. Buck, like some of us, was waisting his potential in the pampered world of civilization.
