In the beginning of the novel why does the author begin by depicting Jane's family? Why won't anyone play with Jane? Is Jane's family ideal?

The novel begins with Janie's return to Eatonville after an absence. Chapter Two describes her family and early life. Janie grew up playing with white children because her grandmother was a nanny. When she started shcool, the other black children made fun of and avoided her because they were jealous of her clothing and where she lived (on the White's land.
