Do you believe the wife has really gone blind? Why or why not?

At last she climbed in and sat beside her husband.
The driver of the ambulance turned round to protest, I can
only take him, those are my orders, I must ask you to get
down. The woman calmly replied, You'll have to take me as
well, I've just gone blind this very minute

The doctor's wife has not gone blind. She is, in fact, the only character is the story that doesn't go blind. Clues that indicate she retains her sight include her ability to do things alone that others cannot. She is still able to act independently.
