So it was decided that Ultima should come and live with us. I knew that my father and mother did good by providing a home for Ultima. It was the custom to provide for the old and the sick. There was always room in the safety and warmth of la familia for one more person, be that person stranger or friend.

It is common in Asian and Latin American cultures to take in the older generation, particularly grandparents but also friends. María tells Gabriel they need to take in Ultima because of how she has helped the community, and that it isn’t right for her to be alone in fer last months. This is one of the few decisions, that Gabriel doesn’t protest, and the whole family agrees that it is their duty to welcome her.
