The Spartan Marathon Run was an annual "torture test" created by Rake to inaugurate each season. It was always held the first day of August practice for optimum heat. A player was forced to run until he collapses with twelve laps around the field as the minimum. If the player was unable to complete twelve laps, he got a second chance the next day, but if he failed again, he was unfit to be a Messina Spartan.
