Why do the Dames make Scyld Scefing their king even though he is only child

I did not know he was only a child when he became king. He is written about in "Prelude of the Founder of the Danish House." Although he was the first Danish King, he was a fearsome warrior earlier in life. It was only later that he became a wealthy man and king.
