Babo is the black, slave leader in "Benito Cereno," who leads the slave revolt against the sailors, and ends up taking over the San Dominick. His cleverness includes masquerading as a servant (Cereno's), threatening Cereno, and planning revolt. He is executed in the end; his cleverness couldn't save his his from being displayed on a pike.
