In the beginnng of Act I, we learn that Raina and her mother, Catherine, are discussing the war. Catherine is far more dressed up than necessary and concerned with the safety of her home. Raina, on the other hand, is engaged to a man named Sergius, who is serving in the Bulgarian cavalry.
