The shift from "we" to "I" is a motif in the novel. Equality 7-2521 finally understands that the collective is killing him. He is unique and impressive. Upon learning the word "I," renames himself "Prometheus." The name "Prometheus" is laden with symbol and meaning relating to individual identity and revolt. Equality 7-2521 later changes the name of his love interest Liberty 5-3000 to the Golden One.
