Why is it important to award military decorations and to commemorate the battle?

The battle of Cowshed was the first battle for the animals. The victory had to be celebrated. The animals needed "heroes" to validate their cause. What is of particular interest is that the awards validate the Pig giving them. Napoleon bestowing these medals on the animals separates him; it gives him a sense of ultimate authority and power.
