What makes the memoir so unique and compelling?

McCourt's writing style allows the reader to walk in his shoes. We feel emotionally invested in the story and thus are more able to understand the poverty and difficulties he faced during his childhood. I think his ability to make the reader "feel" emotionally is what makes this memoir so compelling.
