What is the significance of the title, 'American Born Chinese'?

I think the emphasis on "American born" is significant because Chinese are so often viewed as on culture and people regardless of where they are born. Despite being firmly established as American citizens, many of the characters (who look Chinese) cannot escape the label of "foreigner".
