What are Kate's mixed feelings about Ann?

Kate is a manipulator who loves control. Ann is a strong character who sees through Kate. Ann can stop Kate's manipulation which drives Kate crazy. Ann was married to her son and there are some good memories. Ann getting involved with her other son bothers Kate. It brings home the fact that Larry is dead and Ann feels it a betrayel of sorts.

Kate takes Ann's relationship with Chris as a betrayal to Larry (the dead son). The relationship also brings home the fact that Larry is never coming home.
