All My Sons
9. at the end of act two. Chris stumbles away, asking himself what must I do?" what do you think he is going to do? What would you do?
all my sons
all my sons
Chris is flabbergasted that his father suspected the planes would crash. Furious and betrayed, he asks why his father would do such a thing. For him, his father replies--for Chris, for the family, for the business. Enraged, Chris rants about his father's small-mindedness, in particular his lack of empathy with his countrymen and the human race. "No animal kills his own, what are you? What must I do to you?" He stumbles away, weeping, as his broken father cries out to him. At this point Chris could very well turn his father in but one wonders what that would accomplish. I'm not sure what I would do. I would have to find some way to come to terms with this information. Sending dad to prison would destroy the family completely. Keeping the information might tear me apart. There is no easy way out.
