The end of the novel underscores the central theme of the novel, that racism is evil. This seems so self-explanatory, but unfortunately, as Quinn and Rashad quickly learn, racism is still alive and well in their community. Thus, the end of the novel shows the irony of racism, since all people die, and in death, we are all equal. The novel depicts this irony by Rashad and Quinn's prolonged eye contact. They are "eye-to-eye," or equal. In light of this equality, the events of the book are seen in their full irony.
