How does the media affect our understanding of the Muslim community in Canada today?

This is such a detailed question for this short answer space. I think really this depends on the type of media people consume. Liberal and Conservative media might have certain bias that reinforces what a person believes or doesn't believe. I think the media itself has become polarized on these issues to reflects an already polarized and partisan population.
