After three days of fierce combat, the union soldiers drove the Confederate army back. There were, however, thousands of losses on both sides. The Union army was supposed to have the upper hand and did not completely destroy the Confederate army, there were conspiracy theories: "...what does it mean? Is there bad blood somewhere? Is there a conspiracy among Northern generals that prevents their following up an opportunity for crushing Lee's army?"
