Why does Nana say that it would have been better if her father had done the honorable thing

Nana is talking about her father not having the courage to kill himself. Her father had disowned her when she got pregnant. He abandoned the family going to Iran, never to be heard from again. Honour and family humiliation were very strong aspects of this culture. One family member's action reflected on the whole family.
