A Streetcar Named Desire

Think about the way Williams describes his characters in the stage direction. What is the function of these description? Do they do more than just tell the costume directors what to design?

William's stage direction does far more than address the way he sees his characters, their clothing, or their actions. In fact, his stage direction is so precise that the actors and designers cannot be in anyway confused as to William's desired outcome.... his vision. Williams addresses tone, actions, and pitch of the actors' voices, in addition to specific and detailed timing for the lights fading in and out of view. Williams is like a painter getting ready to show a new piece of art, the only thing he's waiting for is the characters to take their place upon his canvas.
