Why did beneatha want to become a doctor

Much of the novel surrounds each family member's competing dreams. Beneatha is ambitious. She is a black woman who wants to be a doctor. This represents breaking racial, gender, and class norms. I think Beneatha wants to make a statement about black female identity.
