Walter and Beneatha are almost character foils. Beneatha is educated, driven, socially aware and even optimistic. Walter is tired, uneducated, and rather fatalistic. Walter does not see Beneatha's dream about higher education and social mobility. He wants money quickly and has been discouraged at his very limited options because of his poor education and his skin color. Walter thinks he can make quick money by opening a liquor store. Both see their African heritage and place in white America differently.
