. Why does marriage suffer in tense surroundings?

WAlter hates his life and perhaps even himself. He projects his frustrations on basically everyone he knows. Sadly his wife Ruth often gets the brunt of his anger. He is frequently dismissive and rude to Ruth. This builds up in a marriage making it toxic and damaged beyond repair.
