I'm not sure what you mean by four stages of growth. Conor continues to walk through his life as though his mother were not ill: he continues to cook and clean and do his schoolwork. He takes care of himself without resentment, only wishing to honor his mother by doing his best. Several times his mother and grandmother mention that Conor should not be as good as he is.
