A Long Walk to Water

What helped Salva survive?

I need this for a literary essay I have to write but I didn't completely understand the concept of the book. I understand it a little bit but survival is not the part I grasped. 9th-grade worthy details would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Salva survives by listening to others, particularly his uncle. He takes things a little at a time, focusing on one goal before committing to the next. He also thinks of his family, and what his family would want for him.

"How can I go on without them? But how can I not go on? They would want me to survive...yo grow up and make something of my life... to honor their memories."
