Nya and Salva's experiences illustrate the importance of family and survival. It also illustrates the importance of tribal culture, caring for those who are alone and without support. In this way, we learn that the family.... the community, is the most important thing in life.

For Salva, the war has a drastic impact on his life. He is forced to leave home, stay on the move, and traverse on one refugee camp to the next. This is an example of how family and community are threatened, and how they can be ripped apart.
