One major theme is fraudulent authority, as illustrated through the character of Lengel. Lengel is unbending, without foresight... he has no customer skills, thus, his position is a sham.

Irony can be found in Sammy's actions.... the way he speaks up on the girls behalf, the way he quits his job, and the fact that the girls themselves have no idea what he has done for them.
