What causes winston to totally betray julia?

O'Brien hooks a torture contraption to Winston's face. There are rats in this contraptions and a wire gate separates the rats from eating Winston's face. O'Brien knows that this is Winston's worst nightmare. Winston is sincere when he screams to put Julia in his place.
