Winston's state of physical and mental health changes throughout the narrative. In the beginning Winston is a middle-aged man who feels dead inside. He tires walking up steps and is constantly bothered by his varicose ulcer: an expression of his consistently repressed humanity. Winston feels much better during his time with Julia. After they are caught, Winston is subjected to seemingly endless tortures that leaves him a sobbing shaking toothless skeleton. After O'Brien is satisfied Winston is "cured", much of his physical health returns but he is mentally a shell of his former self.
