The play was written in 1954, and The Civil Rights Act that gave women the right to serve on federal juries was not passed until 1957. Even more interesting is the fact that women were not able to sit on juries in all fifty states until 1973. At the time the play was written, twenty-eight states allowed women to serve on juries. Those states also gave women the right to claim exemption based upon their sex.
