The end of the story is important because it serves as a warning. The events of the story could easily happen today. There have been a number of fires in clothing factories in Bangladesh, where cheap continues to be at the forefront of production. I this section, the author chides us for our short memories, our neglect in the present of things we've been taught in the past.
