Margaret is just a child, but she knows enough that she understands the Nazis have changed their lives, and that the Nazis are responsible for the pain, suffering, and anxiety of her friends and family. When Margaret learns that Stuart is a deserted, she views him as a traitor. Over time, however, she comes to sympathize with his status as a self-proclaimed, conscientious objector.
