What or who were the Thirteen Colonies? What was one thing that finally caused them to take up Arms with Britain?

They provided an outlet for England's surplus population and (in some cases) more religious freedom than England did, but their primary purpose was to make money for their sponsors. The colonists, or people living in the colonies, were unhappy about paying taxes without having any say in their government. This caused them to clash with Britain.
