It is a snowman that Jem and Scout made in the front yard. Miss Maudie and Atticus think that it looks like Mr. Avery. THey tell the children to change the look of the snowman.

The "near libel" is the snowman built by Jem and Scout. Atticus tells them that they "can't go around making caricatures of the neighbors"(90). Miss Maudie calls the snowman an "absolute morphodite"(91).
